Outdoor and Environmental Education

Outdoor and Environmental Education utilizes the natural environment to help students understand the interrelationships of the living and physical components of the environment and the role of humans as participators in ecosystems.  The activity-based curriculum focuses on developing skills, attitudes, knowledge and commitment concerning the wise use of natural resources and the protection and enhancement of the environment.

The Philosophy and Objectives of Outdoor and Environmental Education:

LAUSD Office of Outdoor Education programs are characterized by discovery, exploration, and observation in an environment which provides meaningful experiences not readily available to students in the classroom. Supporting Response To Instruction and Intervention (RTI2) at school sites by:
  • Monitoring District– wide CST Science trends and providing instruction in strands with the lowest performance.
  • Improving long term classroom instruction of California Science Standards by modeling high quality first instruction and providing staff development opportuni-ties to teachers. For many teachers, participation in our programs introduces them to the Inquiry Cycle approach to science.
  • Collaborating with OCISS to make direct connections to science curriculum in the classroom.
  • Interdisciplinary connections through structured field study units are designed to incorporate grade specific content linked to California Science Standards.
